My students are working on my favorite project all year… though I am sure many of them HATE it. Their task is simple; plant a seed, water it and measure it’s success. As the teacher I purposely provide a variety of seeds, some are quick to sprout but weak, others are so very slow to show any sign of life but there are very strong. I love watching my student as their plants grow and show signs of life. They make assumptions like: “mine was the first to grow I win!” or “Haha mine is taller!” or my favorite: “my plant is so dumb it isn’t even growing… why did I get this stupid seed”
Even if I try to remind them that it is not what they see but what is going on under the soil that matters. It is what they can’t see that determines the strength of their plant; they remain discouraged until that first sprout of life appears!
So it is with our faith, we pray and pray for a cause, maybe for our friends, or ourselves. We know the result we want and time line in which we want to see it. And when God doesn’t work on our time we give up hope and often we stop praying yet scripture tells us to pray without ceasing.
I am so very guilty of this; let me be 100% vulnerable. I prayed for a roommate of mine for years. We had powerful conversations of faith and God and opportunity to develop faith. She actually helped me define my mission statement when she told me: “I never had the opportunity to have a faith like you” and she was right she hadn’t had the opportunity. But after we moved out of our shared dwelling, and our lives became less intertwined my prayers for her salvation became less consistent until their frequency was close to none.
Maybe in the last year I had prayed for her once or twice, now if you asked me directly I still desired her salvation and I still wanted the blessing of the Lord to pour out on her, but like my students I didn’t see what was going on below the surface and I lost hope.
But the god of the universe, MY GOD, is working even when I cannot see Him! God is on the move. And like my students out of nowhere one day when I wasn’t expecting I saw a sprout of life! A new life! I received an email from my former roommate telling me she and her husband were saved and baptized! They are growing strong and God had a plan and a time line that was more perfect then I could imagine. God didn’t forget my hearts desire even after I did!
Read Romans 8:23 – 27
1. Have you asked the Holy Spirit to help you in your weakness?
2. Do you trust that the God of the universe, YOUR GOD, is at work even when you cannot see it?
3. What have you forgotten about that God is still working on?
I want to hold onto HOPE even when everything I see tells me there is nothing but death around me. I will wait patiently for the sprout of LIFE that the Lord my God is working on. Will you?
